DANCE CHICAGO: DANCES FROM THE HEART 2022

The Best of Dance Chicago has to Offer!

By Debra Flanagan, Macaroni KID Chicago Northside February 23, 2022

Once again, Dance Chicago (now in its 26th season), put together a show that was not only dazzling, and moving, but also inspiring, and even funny.

The February 12th performance was kicked off by Aerial Dance Chicago. Two synchronized dancers gracefully wrap and unwrapped themselves from their silk partners, as they twirled down towards the hard stage. It was equally acrobatic as it was balletic, and it fully demonstrated the incredible strength of these two woman.

The show proceeded with an exquisite performance from Elevations Studio Company, followed by a flamenco solo by Sophia de Leon Sanchez, and several contemporary, jazz, and folk routines by Gus Giordano Company, Visceral Dance Chicago, Beyond Words Dance Chicago, Forum Dance Theater, and even the Hromovtysia Ukrainian Dance Ensemble.

There were breaks of levity sandwiched between dance troupes, provided by Comedy Dance Chicago. This was both surprising and refreshing as this group incorporated humor into their no less talented dance sketches.

Tre' Dumas not only tapped his way into the audiences' hearts, but even provided a romantic serenade.

Lastly, and though I am a little biased as my daughter is a Trinity Irish dancer, the Trinity Irish Dance Ensemble brought down the house as usual with their pulsating steps, high clicks, and fierce drum circle.

The curation of the program by John Schmitz was perfection. If given the opportunity to ever experience a collaboration from Dance Chicago, I highly recommend taking it. It's also relatively inexpensive way to introduce various dance styles to children. Future performances include:

Dance Slam:3/5/22
Future Stars: TBD
Dance Transformations: TBD
Dance Chicago Fall Classic: TBD
Duke it Out! Nutcracker: 12/10/22
Dances from the Heart: 2/11/23
