Beat the Heat at the WhoaZone at Whihala Beach

By Debra Flanagan, Macaroni KID Chicago Northside July 25, 2023

When I first saw pictures of the WhoaZone, I thought to myself it must be in Florida, or some other tropical location. I was pleasantly surprised to learn it is merely 20 miles outside of Chicago in Whiting, IN.

What is the WhoaZone? It is a floating obstacle course on the shores of Lake Michigan. If you have any budding Ninja Warriors at home, the Whoa Zone is a great place to take it to the next level. There are all sorts of balancing acts to be mastered, and when you are wet, it is only that much more challenging. However, if you fail, you just land in the clear, refreshing lake water below. The highlight is a climbing wall with about an 8-10 foot cliff jump, or slide, into the water.

It's really the best of all worlds in the summer, in terms of physical activity and keeping cool.

Single splashes last 50 minutes, but you do have the option to purchase All Day tickets. In between splashes, feel free to lounge on the lovely Whihala Beach or swim outside of the WhoaZone borders. The WhoaZone even has cabanas, lounge chairs, and umbrellas available for rent. It can feel like a true vacation day when the kids are off on the aqua equipment and you can relax on the beach and watch from a distance.

Whihala Beach and the WhoaZone have all the amenities you need, including restrooms and the popular Snack Zone concessions stand and beach store.

The WhoaZone at Whihala Beach is scheduled to be opened until August 20th, so there is still time to check this one off your summer bucket list.
